A Tour Into Medical

Posted on Tue Sep 23rd, 2025 @ 2:26pm by Captain Calypso Skyie & Tessa di'Orion & Lieutenant JG Kally Kellerman

Mission: A Princess Of Tial
Location: Sickbay

The pair walked into sickbay, nearly as if they were twins born on different worlds... And if they looked a fair bit different... And were wearing different clothes... But they were both blonde at least, and the same height and laughing at some joke that the Captain had made right before the door had triggered. "You know, Your Grace, I can see where your daughter got her sense of confidence." Cally shook her head with that smile, "A true treasure of your world."

"I couldn't help but agree with you, My Lady," Sera'e'Metel di'Orion stated in the elegant gown she'd worn, a white and red outfit that left her right arm and leg exposed for the intricate circling tattoos that had an insane amount of detail to them, a golden rising sun on a necklace dangling from her neck, "And she spoke very highly of everyone on board."

"I'm glad we made an impression on her. By the way, this is our main medical facility, where Tessa volunteered to help out during our journey. And this is Doctor Kally Kellerman, my Chief Medical Officer and I believe the one who was teaching her some techniques that we hope to share with you." Cally waved for Kally to come over. "Doctor, this is Baroness Sera'e'Metel di'Orion, Tessa's mother."

Kally self-consciously ran a tongue over her newly-repaired teeth and pulled herself up to her full 5'4" height. She looked the woman over, appreciating the dress and debating about replicating one for her and Katie to surprise Jadizon. "Your Grace," she said, inclining her head. "It has been an honor to have your daughter here with us. She's been an absolute joy to have here."

Sera smiled broadly, "She couldn't stop talking about this place, said it felt like a home away from home, with wonderful new technology that made healing others a breeze and could revolutionize how we could help our people recover from serious injuries." She extended a hand to Kally in a Federation-style greeting, "And as I told Captain Skyie here, up here on your ship, you can call me Sera, but she doesn't think it's a good idea."

Kally took the offered hand and shook it firmly. "As I've learned, over-familiarity with visiting dignitaries can lead to complications," she said. "And I'm flattered she felt this place was a second home. I think of it much the same way. It's where I've been happiest. Where many of us have." She caught the Captain's expression and bit her tongue, putting on a smile. "And Tessa was already quite a skilled physician; a credit to the teachings of your people," she added.

"She's not necessarily one of the prodigies of Urd, but she certainly is advanced for her age, more so now that she's been under your tutelage." Sera brushed her right arm, "I myself am of Skull, which means I'm like one of your engineers, so would you be willing to show me some of your technology? And if possible, would I be able to take some back with me to study?"

Kally nodded. "I would be happy to, Sera," she said. She gestured them to follow and showed Sera some larger pieces, such as the biobeds and the surgical support frame. She also showed her a standard issue tricorder, hyposprays and cortical stimulators. "With the Captain's permission, I can see about having tricorders, and a few other pieces of diagnostic equipment securely packaged for travel to your planet."

"That would be much appreciated." Sera glanced back at the Captain surreptitiously, "One thing I have discovered is that your Federation is very curious, although your technology, like all others we have come across, does not survive well on the surface. If you desired, I would be willing to submit to a medical scan so you could have more baseline information on our people?" The Tialan said it with a slight emphasis, a slight raise of an eyebrow and very slight incline of the head towards Calypso, hoping that Kally would understand the request to speak in private.

For a moment, Kally thought her reputation had preceded her, then realized what was being asked of her. "Of course. We can use exam room two." She gestured to the back of Sickbay and escorted the woman there personally, giving Cally a thumbs up.

As she stepped inside, she locked the door and gestured to the biobed. "If you would have a seat here, Sera, I can scan you." She opened her tricorder.

Sera sat down where indicated and lowered her voice to a sotto voce, even as she reached around to pluck something from one fold of her dress, "My daughter had mentioned several others in regards to her time aboard, but she spent much time on the subject of your head nurse." She brought around a book, of a deep green and white, almost as white as Kally's face, and held it in both hands. "She wished for me to bring this to you for him, should you deem it proper, however I would like to give it to him myself. Can you tell me anything about him?"

Kally swallowed. "Well, he's my Head Nurse. A very capable young man, very by-the-book. He's been invaluable instructing Tessa on the many rules about medical ethics and equipment use and procedure that keep a Sickbay running," she said.

"A good influence on her, then." Sera nodded, "I'm very grateful to him for his services to her. Is there anything else I should know about him?"

Kally licked her lips. "I believe, in their spare time, he taught her an Earth game called chess. Both she and lady Cass found it to be an entertaining challenge, and they became quite friendly with their competitions."

"Then perhaps I should meet him. Can you tell me where he is?" Sera glanced towards the door in hope that he may walk through the door.

"...I um...he can't...he's off today," Kally said, helplessly.

"Then perhaps you can tell me where he could be found?" Sera asked, some insistence in her voice.

Kally sighed in defeat. "Yes, a left out the door and eight units down the corridor," she said. "Perhaps you could check with Captain Skyie if there's time for a side trip, though."

"There will be." Sera stated with confidence, "We do have to visit Engineering and we have already been to the bridge and met that delightful tiny lady named Rebecca, but for someone who has been such a major piece of my daughter's life for the last few months, I must pay him my respects and thanks in person."

"Of course," Kally said. "If you'll forgive me, My Lady, I will need to reset this room." She walked her to the door, smiling. "It was an honor to meet you. And please, remember me to your daughter."

Sera touched Kally on the elbow as she paused at the entrance to the room, "The honor was mine, Milady, and Tessa will be delighted to hear from you. Thank you for your time as well as your grace, patience and care that you gave to her." She gave another smile to the doctor before departing.

As soon as the doors closed, her smiled dropped and Kally tapped her combadge. "Computer, emergency transport to Nurse Taylor's quarters: Authorization Kellerman-Five-Alpha-Blue-One. Prepare for return transport in thirty seconds."

The computer beeped and she disappeared.

***Thirty Minutes Later***

The doors to medical opened once more, but this time the Captain didn't come back in, it was only the Baroness and she immediately spotted Kally once more and came over with a knowing smile. "Lady Kellerman, I wanted to thank you again for guiding me to Henry. It was very informational, as well as good to thank him for his actions."

Kally quickly scanned the Baroness's clothing for any traces of blood, and was relieved to see she was clean. "Well, you're very welcome," she said. "I'm glad your talk with him was productive."

Sera scrutinized Kally expertly for a few moments, wondering just how much she knew about Henry and his feelings, "I was wondering, Milady, how your scanners are about determining any viability of pregnancies?"

That took Kally by surprise. "Exceedingly accurate, ma'am," she said. "Are you asking regarding yourself, or...someone in your employ?" Every prayer she'd ever heard was going through her head that this wasn't about Tessa and that there wasn't any reason for it to be.

'The wheels are turning behind those eyes.' Sera thought to herself as she smiled, 'Uncertainty, curiosity, panic.' "Myself, Milady, I have confirmed that I'm pregnant, but curious as to more of the details and to make sure that it's healthy."

Kally exhaled and smiled, gesturing to a private room. "Of course, Your Grace. Please, this way." She escorted their guest to the exam room and once they entered, locked the door behind them. "Please make yourself comfortable on the bed," Kally said, turning to get a tricorder.

“I appreciate this, Milady.” Sera stated as she gracefully laid down on the bed, the first of her kind to ever have the luxury of this particular procedure. “I should be approximately four months along of roughly eight and a quarter, but I have never been overjoyed with waiting until the seventh month to find out whether it will be a son or daughter. The suspense always kills me and then it’s a rush to prepare everything in those five weeks.”

Kally smiled. "My mother was the same way," she said, pulling the sensor probe out of the tricorder and passing it over Sera's stomach. "She told my father in no uncertain terms that she wanted to know far ahead of time what they were having so that they could tell people what clothing to get and decorate our room."

She pulled up a movable monitor and repositioned it so that Sera could see it. "All right," she said, "let's take a look." She brought up the image of the deep scan. The screen came to life showing a small, yellow-pink form attached to its surroundings by an umbilical cord.

"One healthy, bouncing, baby.....girl," Kally said, smiling at Sera. "Congratulations, Your Grace."

"A sister for Tessa, I think she'll be very happy to hear that." Sera beamed even as her eyes opened wide at the sight of her unborn child. "Now, if I can get some people to gamble on this child being a boy, I can become obscenely wealthy from this information." Her eyes glittered in laughter at the jest. "This is truly amazing that you can tell this early without a risky test."

"There are other tests that can be done that require simpler technology," Kally said. "If you can build medical facilities with the same protections as your energy caverns, you can easily adapt them."

"Our caverns are adapted from natural formations, just expanded. The rock makeup keeps our outside atmosphere out, which is why we have to use an airlock system when bringing something or someone in and out." Sera mentioned, "Given the relative lack of these caverns, with a limited ability to find new ones without exposing them to the atmosphere? Creating more than a handful of facilities is going to be very difficult. Light's End is our most advanced on the planet, but in orbit? No restrictions, really."

"Well, that's more my sister's bailiwick than mine," Kally admitted, scanning her again. "But, humans have a saying: where there's a will, there's a way. My sister likes to say that engineering is just looking at a problem, imagining what the solution is, and figuring out how to make imagination reality."

“And much of what we imagine here has yet to come to fruition,” Sera agreed with her. “Like your transporters, or more embarrassingly, your ability to communicate by video as you do. We are beginning to be able to add crude video feeds, but as most of our actual tech development is happening in orbit, aside from what we can do here, it’s much slower. Security concern with people and all. We may have been an orbital race for over a hundred and fifty years, with warships and all, but it’s all been for a singular purpose and…” Sera laughed as she cut herself off. “You just said your sister was the one to talk to, not to, my apologies, Milady, I get talking about technical things and sometimes just can’t shut up.”

Kally smiled. "It's the same way with Katie. When she gets excited about a project, she can go on for hours. Then again, I can do the same thing about a new medical discovery. We all love to talk about what we're excited about, I suppose." She walked over and picked up a hypospray, programming an injection of prenatal vitamins. "All right, let's give you a vitamin boost, and you should be good to go."

Sera turned slightly to present her arm for the needle she assumed was coming, "Talking about what we're excited about, you say? I'm assuming Tessa has done that with you as well?"

"Oh quite a bit," Kally said. "Whether it's about medicine, swimming, or..." she paused before she said any names, "whatever else she's thrown herself into, she's been all personality about it." She pressed the hypospray against Sera's arm.

"Interesting device you have there..." Sera remarked, changing the subject once more, running her hand across her arm and not feeling any bumps or seeing any residuals. "Used to needles for injections. But thank you again, Milady, perhaps you can visit Light's End before you leave."

"Time permitting," Kally said, politely. "Tessa speaks highly of her world. It sounds lovely." She placed the tools down and helped Sera down off the biobed. "Is there anything else I can do for you, Your Grace?"

"No Milady, you have done more than I could have asked for." Sera reached out to take Kally's hand, "And again, thank you."

"My pleasure," Kally said, escorting her back into Sickbay.
