Final Instructions

Posted on Sun May 31st, 2026 @ 6:12am by Lieutenant Mark Valleroy & Ensign Lavan McGee

Mission: Die Hard: Chimera Edition
Location: Security chief's office, Deck 8

"Come in," Mark called out when he heard the door to his office chime. The doors opened to admit Ensign Lavan McGee, one of the security personnel who'd been among the group of transfers from several months before.

"You wanted to see me, sir?" the young ensign said.

"Ah, yes. Have a seat, Ensign," Mark said. "The captain and XO and I were just going over some things concerning the upcoming Baryon Sweep. One of those things will be the personnel who will be staying to get the last few things ready before we formally turn the ship over to the station personnel who will be handling the sweep."

"Let me guess," Lavan said with a bit of a wry smile. "I'm one of the lucky ones who have been chosen to stay for that."

"Yes. It's not something that was made lightly, of course," Mark replied. "And it's not really going to be anything particularly difficult. It will largely be ensuring that a few organic materials that the science and medical departments are moved off the ship and getting a few final systems prepped appropriately - mostly stuff that we can't really do until the ship is docked. Your job is to just make sure everyone remaining gets their respective job done and gets checked off the list when they leave to go planet-side. You even get to have full use of the security offices while you do so. The tasks are simple enough that it's largely getting turned over to a few noncoms. The only other officer on board will be Nurse Taylor, so for the duration that will effectively be putting you in command of the ship once all the crew who are not staying behind have left. That last part is something that I'll bet you didn't expect to hear when you got up this morning."

"No sir, that isn't," Lavan said with a bit of a grin. "Not that I'm really complaining. Not too many ensigns get to be in command of a Luna-Class ship, even if it is in dock."

Mark nodded. "As mentioned, your job is really just to make sure everyone is done and off the ship when they're supposed to be. You'll be the last person off the ship, and when you're leaving verbally tell the computer to go into Baryon Sweep mode. Things will be set up that the computer will fully initiate the final shutdown upon your instruction. Then head planet-side with the others and have fun until you receive the recall notice. Hopefully nothing major will pop up, but Commander Espersen will be part of the group on the surface and will be available if you should have any questions. Though of course it may not be a good idea to bother him unless it's absolutely necessary, unless you don't mind him going all Academy instructor on you."

"I'll keep that in mind, Sir," McGee said.

"I think I covered everything. Have any questions for me?" Mark asked.

"No, that seems pretty thorough to me," McGee replied. "I'll be sure to contact you if I do think of anything."

Mark nodded. "Don't get too bored," he said, before adding with a wink, "Don't do anything I wouldn't do. Dismissed."
