Operations On The Bridge

Posted on Sat Sep 4th, 2021 @ 1:57am by Captain Calypso Skyie

Mission: The Boneyard Heist
Location: Bridge

Valerie hadn't been aboard the Chimera long and was ready to check out the bridge. She knew she was a junior officer but it was important to her. Stepping off the turbo lift she smiled, the bridge was impressive and she quickly found her way to the operations station. One of the stations that sat in front of the command section of the bridge, she took a seat and activated the console.

Calypso had decided to take a break in the Captain's chair, shooing the junior grade Lieutenant that had been standing the watch out of it, then curled up and had actually drifted off into a snooze. It was a few beeps rather than the turbolift opening that got her to open her eyes a few millimeters and noticed someone sitting in the ops station. Quietly, she stood up and stretched before coming up behind them and placed a hand on their shoulder, "Hello there."

Sheldon hadn't noticed the Commanding Officer in the center chair when she entered. Her eyes had been set on the op's station and nothing else. Looking up to see who had greeted them the Ensign immediately swung the chair around and came to attention "Commander, ma'am."

“At ease, at ease.” Cally waved her a very vague salute, then rummaged in one pocket, then another and finally a third before extracting two pieces of candy, reaching out to the young officer, “Candy?”

"Thank you" Valerie had relaxed and took the candy with a smile on her face. She popped one end into her mouth and then pulled the remaining piece with her hand. "This is good" she said chewing and then returning to the seat. "I'm sorry I'm a little to excited Commander" the Ensign apologized looking back up from the console.

“No problem, Ensign, we all get excited from time to time, even we old fogies.” Cally chuckled, “And if you ever need a sugar fix, come see me, I always have some on me. But, my name is Calypso, so feel free to call me Cally if you want, Ensign…” She left off, expecting the gold uniformed woman to introduce herself.

"Ensign Valerie Sheldon" she smiled "first assignment as an Operations Officer ma'am."

"It's a pleasure to meet you, Valerie," Cally patted her on the shoulder with a yawn, "Sorry, I was taking a bit of a nap when you came in, but it's good to have someone from Ops on board. Before you arrived, we had a PO 2nd who was a quartermaster's mate on the Halsey before he was transferred here. You happen to be the first Ops Officer on board."

"Oh" Valerie chipped "Well it's a pleasure to be here ma'am." She ran her hand over the operations station "I know I'll probably hardly see any bridge time, but it's my dream."

"I wouldn't count that out just yet, I've got this hunch you're going to see far more bridge time than you expect to." Cally snorted a laugh, "We're not expecting to get anyone else for Ops until we get to Starbase 614, assuming they have someone for us."

Valerie just looked at Cally for a few seconds and then got herself together. "I'm not sure" she stammered on her words for a second "I'm not sure, I'm this is my first assignment ma'am."

“Don’t worry your head off about it, Valerie, it’s all learning on the job and I’ll make sure the COB keeps an eye on you to make sure you don’t screw up too badly. I’m also here if you’ve got questions or problems as is the Exec. We all make mistakes from time to time, so if you make one, I’m not going to bite your head off. It’s how we recover from those mistakes that really matter.”

"I appreciate that ma'am" Valerie said nervously and smiled as she tried to reassure the Captain that she could handle things "I'll always do my best Captain."

"I know you will, but I do have a quest for you if you're up for it." Cally smiled down at her, "Can you get into the system and find out the status of all the ships in the boneyard? Like what their supply levels are, any small craft interred and their status in the maintenance system, like if they're actively being worked on?"

"Shouldn't be to difficult" Val said as she started working on the console in front of her. "Our sensors could use some work" she admitted looking up at Cally and then back at her console. "Here we are Captain" the display on the console changed and gave Cally as much information as Valerie could find.

Time to really give the young woman a bit of confidence, even as Cally glanced over the information, "Take your time as you're doing it, but I'd like you to prepare something that has the ship names and locations within the yard for say... The ten ships that have the highest supply levels and aren't under active maintenance, as well as the ships that have small craft as part of their inventory. It doesn't have to be right now, take a few hours for it."

"Shouldn't take long ma'am" Valerie was certain she could have it done with in the hour and went to work on the requested information.

"Get me a copy, then be ready to present it when I call for a staff meeting." Cally said quietly, "But if you don't mind, I'm going to snooze in my chair while you're working on that, okay?"

"It's your bridge ma'am." the Ensign replied and focused on her work. She was nervous as hell about having to present at the staff meeting, but she couldn't let that stop her.

Calypso patted the ensign on the shoulder again, "You're going to be fine, I promise." Before she went back to her comfortable chair, then curled up in it and dozed off once again.
