Stenn entered and spoke with a receptionist Nurse. She took down his details, had him take a seat and went to advise the the Chief Medical Officer they had another new transfer routine flight physical waiting.

A few minutes later the Nurse came out and brought Stenn into a side ward, had him take off his tunic and climb up on the biobed, she recorded his vitals on his record and said. "Thank you Commander, Doctor Syrial will be with you shortly"

The nurse's words rang true. After only a couple minutes, the J'naii doctor slipped through the narrow entrance of the side ward to see the Vulcan. They smiled at the man. Apparently the nurse had had the Vulcan take off his tunic - Syrial probably could have finished the exam with it on, but the nurse came from an older station, and was used to older, weaker equipment and a workflow that relied more on actual, physical evaluation. Oh well. Old habits died hard. The doctor could work with this.

"Lieutenant Commander Stenn," Syrial smiled. They were no stranger to working on Vulcans, and because their cheerful goofiness was partially an act anyway, they could easily tone it down if it made the room more comfortable. "I'm glad to see you here for this appointment." The doctor stepped aside to look at a computer screen, where the nurse had already pulled up his files. "Before I start the physical; do you have any questions? Or concerns?"

"Not at this time Doctor, thank you" Stenn replied. He was normally fit and healthy, balancing mental discipline, meditation and physical exercise in a harmonious way.

He noted the Doctor's species, it was not one often encountered within Starfleet ranks. He wondered briefly on her nature, probably quiet adventurous for her to have left the closely defined society of her homeworld.

"Alright," Syrial turned to grab the scanner. "That's good to hear." The doctor stepped forward and started to scan the Vulcan, not wasting as much time with their usual small talk or gossip. That didn't mean they avoided the small talk altogether. "Did I see it right on your record that your wife was also on this ship?" The doctor asked.

"That is correct, Valsai is a member of the Federation Diplomatic Service." He responded. "It was fortunate for us that the Chimera will be tasked with missions of exploration and encounters with new lifeforms where both our specialties may be of use"

"Fortunate indeed," Syrial chuckled, talking as they scanned the Vulcan. No use in staying silent here; even a Vulcan couldn't claim that such silence would make the scans go faster. "What I wouldn't give to have my husband up here with me! Unfortunately he isn't exactly, how he does he call it? 'Space material'. I think the word humans used to use would be 'landlubber'." The J'naii smiled fondly at the thought. "I'll have to see Valsai soon for her physical as well. Or if you'd rather, I could assign it to one of the other doctors. I know some folk don't like to share a doctor with their spouses."

"We have no such qualms" Stenn replied. "I believe her appointment was scheduled approximately thirty seven minutes after my own"

"Excellent," the J'naii smiled. After finishing the scans, the doctor stepped aside, plugging the results into the computer for it to evaluate them. "Thirty seven minutes, huh?" Syrial preferred to have appointments at thirty minute intervals. It seemed such a little difference but... well, another thing to discuss with whichever nurse was making the schedule. Funny. Syrial was far, far from the micromanaging type. Yet with a couple of these nurses and that assistant chief who seemed to care more about the cleanliness of the sickbay than about the patients... the J'naii would have their work cut out for them. "So what type of scientist are you?" Syrial chatted. "I myself was thinking of switching over to the science division a while ago. I do enjoy the genetics research I did, back on Earth."

"I have studied a range of science disciplines, my first Doctorate was on transwarp filed theory, my second on a number of the biological differences between Gamma Quadrant species. I have also studied history and archeology, as well as a range of other scientific subjects. As Chief Science Officer it is important to have a broad range of experience and knowledge.

Human genetic research has a... checkered history. They created advanced Humans that nearly seized control of their planet during the eugenics wars. Other experimentation has led to brilliant but flawed intellects. It is an area of medical science beset with many pitfalls" Stenn replied.

Syrial shrugged. "'Pitfalls' might be subjective. My species never had any eugenics wars, after all. Why blame the science for one of humanities' failings?" Syrial found the Federation's laws about genetic modifications quite limiting. They were not about to say that in front of Vulcan, however. Although the J'naii might not be a Federation species, they had agreed to the Federation's laws when they had joined Starfleet... an organization which did not, perhaps, need to know about all the research they did during their leave of absence on their homeworld. The doctor looked up from the computer. "Your scans look good by the way."

"Thank you Doctor, it is as I expected" Stenn replied "And I do not blame science Doctor, holding an inanimate area of study responsible for the actions carried out by sentient beings is not logical"

Syrial chuckled as they finished up their appointment. "If only the humans saw that, as well."

"Perhaps, in time.." He slid off the bed and redonned his tunic. "Thank you Doctor, you will forgive me for saying I do not intend visiting you again before my next physical. Good day" He nodded polite and left.

A few minutes after the Commander's departure a Nurse informed Syrial of the arrival of her next patient. "Another Vulcan Doctor, I believe it is the Commander's wife"

Valsai was laying back on the biobed when Syrial entered. Hands interlocked over her abdomen, her eyes closed and breathing in a regular controlled manner, pausing between inhaling and exhaling. The biobed's readouts showed a very low hear beat, low blood pressure and a high level of Alpha Wave activity in her brain.

"These beds are actually quite comfortable." She announced without opening her eyes. "You will forgive me Doctor, I took the opportunity for a moment's medication."

"Nothing to forgive," Syrial smiled. "I appreciate the compliment on my beds." Although Syrial had not been the one to pick the biobeds out, they could feel themselves getting a bit protective of the equipment in the medbay as if it were their own.

Valsai completed two more breathing cycles, then sat up, twisting sideways, dropping her legs over the side of bed and opening her eyes. As she did so the readouts showed increased physiological functions and the Alpha waves were rapidly replaced by active Beta Waves.

She extended a hand in the Human manner. "Hello Doctor, I'm Valsai."

Syrial took her hand in a handshake. "Hello Valsai," they responded. "I'm Syrial." The doctor smiled, finding faint amusement that a Vulcan and a J'naii, two distinct cultures, were using a human method of greeting. "Are you ready for your physical, then?"

"Greetings Syrial. You may proceed" The woman replied.

"Good to hear," Syrial smiled, grabbing a scanner. The doctor had already read through Valsai's file, having opened it when her husband was having his appointment. The doctor turned around and began scanning.

As the examination proceeded Valsai commented. "This is the first joint assignment Commander Stenn and I have had in several years. We are considering having children since we are both at our optimum reproductive stage."

"That makes sense," Syrial responded. "Much easier to have children now than when you're older. You both seem perfectly fit so far. Now, I don't mean to pry, but do you know when your next pon farr might be?"

"Not for another three years, but as we are a joined couple that only involves a re-consecration of our union. We do not need to wait for that to procreate" Valsai replied openly.

Syrial nodded as they continued the scans. "There is research showing some correlation between that and fertility cycles."

The J'naii smiled, stepping away towards the computer to check the results of the scans. "Depending on certain factors, and, well..." the doctor shrugged. "Just know that there are treatments we can do to increase the chances."

"Thank you Doctor" Valsai replied "Hopefully the Commander and I will be able to successfully accomplish the mission ourselves She managed to mimic Stenn's clipped speech pattern precisely and without the faintest hint of a smile, although there may have been a passing gleam in her eye.

Syrial's amused smile when they turned away from the computer to look at her made up for Valsai's lack of one. "Well, good luck then. Your scans all look good. Are there any other questions, or concerns, you might have?"

"Not at this time. Thank you Doctor" Valsai replied, climbing down from the bed.

"Thank you for coming to see me," Syrial smiled at the Vulcan. As if this physical were optional. "Until next time," they said their farewell.
