New Beginings

Mission: The Boneyard Heist
Location: SB 614/ USS Chimera-Ready Room

Richard couldn't sleep he was nervous with anticipation. It reminded him of his first assignment out of the academy and to be honest it was almost like that again. Even after all the years and being in Command and everything here he was a junior grade Lieutenant about to board his first ship in years. He had just gotten word from the base CIC that the Chimera was in dock. So he gathered his things and made the trek from his quarters to the docking port. He had spent alot of time in the North and had never been on 614 so as he made the stroll he took it all in. Nothing really stood out but each base each ship had its distinct hum and Rich believed its own attitude about it.

Rich found the Luna class ship and there seemed to be a rush of people coming onboard. He found his way in line and checked in and gave his bags to the quartermaster to have them sent to his room. He was excited to check out the SCIF but he knew what he had to do first was have the good ole check-in with his new boss. He was curious if it how weird it was going to as an over forty junior grade checking in to a twenty-something CO. That seemed to be the direction the Federation was going in.

Rich made his way across the bridge and found the entrance to the Ready Room. 'Here goes nothing' He thought as he tugged his uniform jacket straight and pressed the door chime.

“Ugh!” Cally groaned as the chime sounded, regretting telling Tyler to explore the base, get the skinny from the locals while she got things settled on the Chimera, because the desk in front of her was filled with PADDs, some were requisitions forms, requests, individual personnel files, departmental files, everything under the sun. She’d just gotten into it half an hour before, her coffee gone cold as she’d tried to focus, but maybe this was that engineer the Commodore had sent over, “Cone in!” She called out, reaching out to her cup and turning in her chair to put it back in the replicator to get a fresh one. She heard the door open and shut behind her as the fresh cup of coffee came into being, “Can I get you something to drink?” She asked whoever it was blindly, “Non-alcoholic, despite all this crap on my desk.”

"Coffee, black". Rich replied as he made his way across the room towards the Captain. Not what he was expecting but he enjoyed this surprise. Rich scanned the pile on her desk. "Care for so professional advise? Concentrate on your req reports first. The rest will work themselves out.". He offered before being turned down.

It wasn’t the voice she’d expected to hear and Cally turned around with the requested drink and spotted the grey uniform rather than the gold one she’d expected to see, “I think… I might. I’m sorry, Lieutenant, but I don’t think I was expecting you, was I? I haven’t gotten to the personnel lists yet, so I’m not really sure…” She handed over the coffee with her left hand as her right extended itself, “Commander Calypso Skyie, Queen of the Chimera.” She told the little joke, “And you are?”

"Richard Wayne, back from being mothballed." He trailed off with his retort. "And now I am your Chief Intel Officer." He finished as he took the black coffee once offered.

“Back from being mothballed…” Calypso repeated, “Grab a chair and explain…” She mused, “I could use a bit more detail, unless of course you’re willing to sit there like a prized parrot while I search through this for your file?” She smiled as she gestured to the desk, “I’m sure it’s in here somewhere.”

"Well I once sat in your chair." He said just ripping the band-aid off. "I was honorably discharged in eight-nine and spent five years in the private sector." He took a sip of the coffee. "Then I got picked up by SFI and they talked both me and Starfleet to bring me back. And here I am new rank, new job, and ready to get back out there?"

From the first sentence, that grabbed Cally’s attention, “As a Jay Gee?” It wasn’t a question that asked for an answer and she waved it away to indicate that. She made a mental note to dig out his file immediately after he left, “This is my first actual command, so I may call on you if I get in a situation I’m unsure of enough. Besides, you’re the one with all the information, definitely a good resource. Don’t get me wrong, I had good skippers, but there’s a huge difference between being the backup and being the one on the spot. What did you do in your time out of the fleet, if you don’t mind me asking?”

"Well after some time off to grieve my son's dealth, who I just found out existed. I was hired by Securitas United. They are a private Security and Intelligence firm. Was working my way up the ranks when I was approached by SFI after some interactions on a contract I was working on."

She resisted the grimace at the mention of his sons death, but nodded, “So you kept your nose in the game still, good. You don’t happen to have any contacts on the ground out in this area, do you? Just in case we need them. I’m not asking for names or locations or anything of the sort, mind you, just a yes or no.”

Richard grinned. "I know some people. Its been a while since I was out this way but I am sure I can check in on them and see what they are up to and if they are still in the game or if they have backed away."

“Eeeexcellent.” Calypso rubbed her hands together deviously, “I know that we’ll have the entirety of the SFI network to call upon while we’re out this direction, but no doubt everyone who’s anyone will be doing things to try to prevent them from getting that information. So having another source of data or even just an ace in the hole we can call upon would be quite useful.”

"Well that is what I want to be is useful, however that might be Captain." He said with his dashing grin. "I know you are terribly busy if there is nothing else I am looking forward to checking out the SCIF and meeting any of the team that has arrived."

“By all means, but I’m not sure how much of an analyst team you’re going to have to work with.” Cally laughed, once again gesturing to her desk, “The personnel list is somewhere in here as well and that’s what I’ve been trying to find. Escaping now would mean you don’t need to help me locate it.”

"That just solidifies my need to run and hide." Richard said looking at the pile. "It is like a right of passage for first time COs to get their feet wet and realize it seems like alot but in the end it isn't."

“This is the second set of all this in a month!” Calypso gasped in mock-exasperation, “That’s it, I’ve got help now…” She began to rummage through the stacks of PADDs, in search of something.

Richard watched his new Captain dive in to the pile looking for something he thought about staying and earning brownie points but instead a full retreat was in order. He had his own mess and he was not looking to end up in the center chair ever again.

Even though she heard the hiss of her door open and close, Cally kept searching and found the item she was looking for and looked up, “Oh drat.” She said to herself, a smile on her face, “Another one got away.” Activating the PADD, she leaned back in her chair to peruse the new crew, her mood infinitely better.

Richard took a sigh of relief as the door shut and did not get summoned back. He looked around the bridge taking it all in. He was back on a Federation vessel. Somewhere he had thought may never happen again. After a second of nostalgia he snapped out of his trance and made his way to his new office.
