Mission:
Trade And Tribulations
Location: Captain's Quarters
The uniform jacket landed on the chair and stuck for a few moments before slowly sliding off into a pile on the floor and Calypso sighed before deciding to leave it where it was. It wasn't doing anyone any harm and she'd have all night to pick it back up, though no doubt something was going to happen that required her to put it back on before she'd get to truly relax. She laced her hands behind her head as she slowly walked around the spacious living area, the briefing that the Commodore had just given her on their next destination. Well, the Commodore, then the Dashian trade ship Captain B'Talian Ghorresh.
The Dashian were a race from beyond the borders of explored Federation space and were a nightmare to look upon. But the information this Captain had provided her was more valuable than a hold's worth of gold-pressed latinum, it really decided the course that Chimera would take.
"Captain's log, Stardate..." She glanced at the chrono, "Input current Stardate, computer. In under forty-eight hours, Chimera will be back underway with all major repairs and upgrades performed. We'll be heading at roughly galactic North from Starbase 614 at Warp Nine for two weeks in order to reach the world of Trarim. Trarim is a Class-M planet that did not produce an intelligence species but is as close to a paradise world as is possible by the standards of Earth.
"Since Class-M planets are a rarity in any part of the galaxy, there have been several attempts at colonies placed on this world in the last few hundred years, causing the occasional war among local sentients. At least one genocide has been committed in these conflicts, until another more powerful outside race, the Dashians, brought in their fleet to put a stop to the warfare. All colonists were removed from Trarim to their home worlds and a central metropolis created by yet another species to act as a trade center approximately four hundred of our years ago.
Ever since then, guaranteed by Dashian fleet units, Trarim has remained a neutral world with only a handful of laws that are spawned from common sense. Murder, thievery, outright swindling and such are all outlawed, with punishments ranging from fines, to temporary servitude to execution for the most heinous of crimes being meted out by the Dashian security forces. The Captain has only visited Trarim twice, but has described it as a place of peace and safety that has entertainments for all people. He has, however, warned me that there will be aspects that are contradictory to the values he has seen from his visits to the Federation. He has provided us letters of introduction from the Elder Council of the Dashian Hegemony as well as an invitation from the 'Pria' of Trarim, the local governmental head."
Calypso bent down to retrieve the uniform jacket and place it on the chair, still in a haphazard lump, but at least it wasn't on the floor. "My intent is to head directly there unless something catches the eye that's too tempting to pass up, then perhaps use Trarim as basically a base of operations for several weeks. I'll be authorizing significant amounts of leave time on-world while Chimera liases with the Dashian Fleet to help provide for the safety and security of the system. While on planet, I will be expecting the crew to submit reports on everything they see and hear, because these people and races will have rumors and facts on new and interesting things that may never have been seen in the Federation.
"New life, new civilizations." She said softly but slowly, "The dream of every Captain in the Fleet, to literally become the first to meet new peoples and places. At least, the dream of most Captains. I always figured I'd be sent to hotspots to reinforce other units, but instead I get to be an Ambassador, since no diplomats are being assigned to Chimera. A lot is riding on my shoulders and the shoulders of my mostly young crew. We aren't receiving a lot of experienced reinforcements, though I am getting my Marines back under the command of Captain Natalya Markova once again. I hope not to have to use them, but experience shows me otherwise.
Her commbadge chirped and she tapped it, "Captain here." Then listened for a few moments, "On my way." And tapped it again and grabbed her uniform jacket once more, "Let's see what happens. End Captain's Log."
